Motion Design

Through intermedia processing of painting, collage, scanning and visual media production- a video interpretation through shape and form montages the passing of time.

I immersed myself in the video work of Len Lye, known for his innovative blending of sound, color, shape, and form in experimental films. As a pioneering New Zealand-born artist, Len Lye was a trailblazer in both experimental filmmaking and kinetic sculpture, and his work serves as a fantastic source of inspiration for exploring the interplay between visual art and motion. During the course of viewing his videos, I listened and intuitively chose colors to paint and forms to create with my medium.

After completing my initial interpretation work, I adopted a mindful approach to the next stages of my process. I studied how the forms resonated with me and what they could represent in their entirety. I cut the forms and organized them into a spiral, symbolizing the four seasons of life, reflecting the progressions and ebbs and flows of color and form.

The first season represents learning, exploration, and development, characterized by organic shapes and the bright chaos of yellows, greens, and purples reminiscent of childhood. The second season reflects young adulthood, filled with experience, adventure, travel, and curiosity, showcased in deep blues and greens with bright complementary oranges and magentas. Alternatively, this season can signify challenges, mistakes, and trials, represented by reds, oranges, and sharp forms.

Transitioning into a phase of wellness, rhythm, grounding, and peace, I explored comforting shapes and hues of blue and green, complemented by ample negative space. After establishing my intentions and the narrative of the piece, I studied concepts of choreographed space in bold and peaceful mediums, aiming to create a sense of piqued curiosity and refined craftsmanship. The piece transcends through a sense of abstract fluidity, harnessing a disposition of harmonic form through spaces of high and low economies.

To further elaborate these feelings, I transitioned to the medium of collage to enhance the overall experience. I aligned color, pattern, and imagery with the already composed work. Finally, I scanned these pieces to digitally render color, form, and texture, composing a montage of layers, frames, and opacity into a short film while coordinating audio to create an engaging and cumulative sharable experience.
